Creatine is an organic acid that occurs naturally in vertebrates. It has a nitrogenous base, or nitrogen-containing base (an organic molecule with a nitrogen atom that has the chemical properties of a base).

Its main role is to facilitate recycling of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the energy currency of the cell, primarily in muscle and brain tissue.
