The poison distribution is used when the probability of 'success' is very small and there are a large number of events. Failed to parse (syntax error): {\displaystyle P\left( x \right) = \frac} {{e^{ - \lambda } \lambda ^x }}Template:X!

Examples of a poison distribution:

  • number of cars passing a certain point
  • number of spelling mistakes per page
  • number of phone calls per minute in a calling centre
  • number of times a website is accessed per minute
  • number of stars in a give volume of space
