Description

Grace Shih, a doctoral student in materials science and engineering at the University of Arizona, drives from Tucson to Tempe several times a month to work on a key part of her research.

She settles into a small, sturdy, soundproof building on the campus of Arizona State University at a world-class electron microscope where she studies the composition of extremely thin chemical films.

Her work could have a global impact because she is working toward increasing the efficiency of solar cells, which is necessary before solar energy can be used widely.
