An ability becomes a capability when:

  • Rare... so that the competitors don't have it
  • Valuable... so that it has an impact on performance
  • Hard to copy... so that it cannot easily be copied by competitors

Sample capabilities

  • Speed - Making important changes happen faster (dell, lenovo, samsyung)
  • Learning - Absorbing new information and experiences better (toyota, amazon, GE)
  • Efficiency - Being leaner and managing cost of operation better (Ryanair, Lidl, Aldi, Wal-Mart)
  • Innovation - Doing more new things in both content and processes (Apple, Intel, 3M)
